William F. Winders
March 21, 1911 - June 11, 2009
William Flemmon Flem Winders, 98, retired business executive died June 11, 2009 at home in Reston, Virginia.
Mr. Winders was born on Hilton Head Island and attended schools there and in Savannah. For seven years, he worked in Savannah as an accountant for the Cudahy Packing Company and the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast Railroad.
In 1936 he began a 40 year career with Tennessee Eastman Company in Kingsport, Tennessee, a major manufacturer of chemicals and plastics. He retired in 1976 as Vice President for Industrial and Public Relations.
Mr. Winders served nine years in the Georgia National Guard and 6 years in the Tennessee National Guard, and was active in civic affairs in Savannah and elsewhere. He was on the boards of several financial institutions, churches, colleges, and charitable and youth organizations and was an active member of the Rotary Club in Kingsport, Reston, and while living in London for three years in the mid 1990's.
On the regional and national level, he was chairman or director of the American Management Association, Southern Industrial Relations Conference, Tennessee Manufacturer's Association, U.S. Industrial Council, and the Tennessee Independent Fund.
Mr. Winder's wife of 60 years, Mary Jenkins Winders of Savannah, died in 1998.
Survivors include two children, Peter J. Winders of Tampa, Florida and Martha Winders Helgerson of Reston; three grandchildren, Peter J. Winders, Jr., Katherine Helgerson, and Paul Helgerson; and two great-grandchildren, Claire and Ian Helgerson.
There will be a graveside service at Bonaventure Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday June 23, 2009.
